July 1: Our first free day in Japan by Andy Carlson

This was the first day when all of us were unshackled by the bounds of academics and responsibilities, and could finally forge our own path to explore Tokyo and take advantage of the historical and cultural sights and sounds that many of us were looking forward to since our arrival. For some, it was an opportunity to revisit destinations we had already seen, as the Ginza district abounds with historical landmarks and great shopping. For others (such as myself) it was an opportunity to realize a childhood dream and visit the Pokemon center nestled deep in the Ikebukuro neighborhood. Our day concluded with the group visiting the famed Shibuya crossing, just a hop skip and a jump from our hotel in Shinjukyu. Despite the carefree nature of our day, there were still many lessons that learned. Whether it was finding out how to navigate around a new neighborhood, discovering the history behind the Chrysanthemum seal for the Japanese Imperial family, or how to order Udon noodles on a touchscreen, all of us teachers in training showed that we are still very much students in our own regard. Soon, our time in Tokyo together will conclude, and we will all scatter to the wind like so many cherry blossoms, but the experiences we all shared in this crazy, yet hyper-efficient city will always live on in our blog.
